| 解説 | コローがバレエ《泉》を観て心を動かされ、描いたとされる作品です。ギリシャ・ローマの神話を集めたオウィディウスの『変身物語』に登場する双子の兄妹カウノスとビブリのエピソードがもとになったともいわれています。妹ビブリは兄を慕いますが、カウノスはこれを恐れて他国に逃れます。兄を追いかけて放浪の途中で倒れたビブリは、自らの涙のうちに泉へと変身してしまいました。画面左下のビブリの方へ森のニンフらがかけよっている場面です。 コロー最晩年の美しい神話画です。 This work is believed to have been painted by Corot after he saw the ballet La Source. It is also said to be based on the episode of the twin siblings Kaunos and Bibli in Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a collection of Greek and Roman myths. Bibli, the sister, falls in love with her brother Kaunos, but Kaunos does not return her affection and flees to another country. Bibli follows her brother and falls along the way, turning into a fountain of her own tears. The forest nymphs moving towards Bibli can be scene in the lower left section of the painting. A beautiful mythological work made in the twilight of Corot’s life. |
