If you look closely at the deep forest’s colorful leaves and flowers, images of lively animals come into sight. In the foreground, a mythical phoenix catches a goat with its sharp claws, and a lion lets out a roar. Figures of humans, on the other hand, are small and in the distance, suggesting that the animals are the owners of this forest. This tapestry was produced in Belgium in the 16th century, and the theme of a “savage garden” is traditional iconography passed down in Europe since the Middle Ages.
