The Japanese sasanqua camellia was depicted here. The flowers were drawn with carefully measured lines and a completely refined color palette. A sparrow spreads its wings in the upper-left part of the frame. Both the flower and sparrow are depicted as if time has stopped. This work shows the tranquility that defines Bakusen in his later years, and there is a sense of tension as well as clarity. There were movements in the early Showa era to reevaluate and recapture the nation’s traditional method of expressions such as lines, refined colors, and symbolism.
