WIRGMAN stayed in Japan from the end of the Edo period into the Meiji period, teaching painting to TAKAHASHI Yuichi and GOSDA Horyu. He also made a name for himself in diplomacy, traveling with the British ambassador to Japan. From June to July 1870, on a trip northward on the Nakasendo and Hokkoku Kaido as a companion to Chargé d'Affaires F.O. Adams, he visited the prefectures of Gunma, Nagano, and Niigata, up to Niigata City. This work is a watercolor painting of the inn where he actually stayed. The two-story home with a stone roof and the area under the eaves painted white leave an impression.
