DescriptionA low horizon and large mast shape the center of the composition. Illuminated from behind, the mast tilts slightly to the left, making the ship appear to rock.
At the Technical Fine Arts School established in 1876 as part of the government’s policy of promoting new industry, Koyama Shotaro received a full-fledged education in Western painting from Italian painter Antonio Fontanesi, who had been invited as a hired foreign artist. This piece was created while Shotaro was still a student. The poetic scene, with its atmospheric depiction of nature, making use of the expressive effects that are unique to oil painting, such as delicate gradations of color, reveals that not only had Shotaro mastered the techniques of Western painting, but also had a strong grasp of the ideology of creating an aesthetic world.
