| 作品解説 | 佐藤は彫刻制作の傍らで、多くの絵本を生み出しました。絵本「おおきなかぶ」は、トルストイによって再話されたロシア民話であり、内田莉莎子が翻訳、佐藤忠良が作画した絵本です。シベリア抑留に際して現地の暮らしを目に焼き付けた佐藤にとって、本作は渾身の一作となりました。リズミカルな文章にあわせるように、佐藤は、かぶを引き抜こうとする動作と休息する様子を交互に描くことによって、場面展開に緩急を生み出しました。人体の動きが表現の要であるこの絵本のために、佐藤は三度もデッサンしたといいます。 |
| Description | In addition to creating sculptures, Sato also created many picture books. The picture book The Gigantic Turnip is a Russian folk tale as retold by Aleksey Tolstoy, translated by Uchida Risako, and illustrated by Sato Churyo. For Sato, who had been detained in Siberia and witnessed life there with his own eyes, this work was a masterpiece. In keeping with its rhythmic text, Sato created a sense of speed in the unfolding of the scene, alternating between depicting the action of a person trying to pull up the turnip and the person resting. It is said that Sato sketched out this picture book three times, with human movement being key to its expression. |
