DescriptionAt the age of 10, Goseda Yoshimatsu became an apprentice to British reportage artist Charles Wirgman. This is considered to be one of the earliest instances of a Japanese person learning Western painting techniques directly from a Westerner. However, his teacher Wirgman is said to not have been particularly skilled at oil painting, and Yoshimatsu’s instruction in Western painting techniques has been pointed out to not necessarily have been systematic. Still, Yoshimatsu was blessed with a knack for painting, and within a few years, he had mastered Western painting techniques from pencil drawing and watercolors to oil painting. This piece, depicting a girl with a plump face gazing toward the viewer, shows no exaggeration or unnatural depiction, demonstrating the solidity of Yoshimatsu’s oil painting technique.
