作品解説海外で絵を学ぶにはフランス留学が一般的だった時代、清水登之は20歳で単身渡米、数年間働いた後、シアトルやニューヨークで美術を学び、30歳頃から都市の生活者を主題とするようになりました。
本作品は、アメリカで評価を得た後、フランスに渡り、描かれたもの。デパートの包みを抱えて立つ女性や切符を切る女性、ガイドブックを持ったシルクハットの男性等がいる地下鉄の情景が描かれています。幾何学的な建築やボリューム感のある人物からなる構成に、新しい展開も見られますが、テーマはあくまでも都市生活のひとこまを表すことにあります。

清水登之　1887‐1945
栃木県下都賀郡国府村（現・栃木市）生まれ。1907年渡米。農園などで働いて学費を貯め、1912年よりシアトルのオランダ人画家フォッコ・タダマ、1917年よりニューヨークのジョン・スローンに学んだ。1924年に渡仏し、サロン・ドートンヌなどに出品。都市の風景をそこに暮らす人々の姿とともに描いた。1927年に帰国。1929年に第16回二科展で樗牛賞、1930年に第17回二科展で二科賞受賞。同年、独立美術協会創立に参加。
DescriptionAt a time in which studying in France was the norm for learning to paint overseas, Shimizu Toshi instead traveled alone to the United States at the age of 20. After working for several years, he studied art in Seattle and New York and began to focus on city dwellers as his subject matter from around age 30.
This piece was painted after he moved to France, having garnered acclaim in the United States. It depicts a subway scene, with a woman standing, department store package in hand, another woman punching her ticket, and a man in a top hat holding a guidebook. Although in its composition, consisting of geometric architecture and voluminous figures, we can see new development, its theme remains simply to depict a slice of urban life.
