作品解説1950年代、戦後日本が復興を目指していた時代、美術界でも新しい芸術を作ろうという機運が高まっていました。白髪一雄がたどり着いたのが、「足で描く」という手法です。床に広げた大きなキャンバスの上に絵の具の塊を置き、身体をロープで支えながら、素足で押し広げるという描き方でした。勢いのまま画面外に滑り出しそうになる身体を画家としてコントロールする、無意識と意識の格闘の跡が、見る者を圧倒する絵画に結実しています。
タイトルは、白髪が愛読していた中国の長編小説『水滸伝』に登場する豪傑の名前に由来します。

白髪一雄　1924‐2008
兵庫県尼崎市生まれ。1948年、京都市立絵画専門学校（現・京都市立芸術大学）日本画科卒業と同時に洋画に転向。1952年、関西の若手作家で0会を結成。1954年、素足による絵画を初めて制作。1955年、吉原治良率いる前衛美術集団「具体美術協会」の会員となり解散まで中心となって活躍。生涯、足による描法を追求した。
DescriptionAs Japan sought to rebuild after the war in the 1950s, the momentum for creating new art was growing in the art world. What Shiraga Kazuo came to discover was the technique of painting with his feet. He placed blobs of paint on a large canvas laid out on the floor, and then supporting himself with rope, spread the paint out with his bare feet. The artist’s struggle between the conscious and unconscious mind as he tried to control his body, threatening to slide off the canvas with its momentum, resulted in paintings that overwhelm the viewer. The Japanese title of this piece comes from the name of a hero who appears in the Chinese novel Water Margin, which Shiraga loved to read.
