| 作品解説 | 高橋由一が宮城県を訪れた当時は、元仙台藩の学問所、養賢堂の講堂が、県庁舎として使われていました。国内まれに見る規模を誇った養賢堂の建物を県庁として活用するために、畳は板張りに、障子はガラス戸に改修され、和風の門に替えて白い洋風の立派な門も建てられました。 文明開化の様子を伝えるこの新しい風景に、由一は、バルビゾン派の流れをくむイタリア人画家、フォンタネージの影響をうかがわせる逆光の木立や、馬車のシルエットをあわせて、情趣的な記録画を完成させました。洋画に写実と「一つの趣味」を認め、その普及に尽くした由一の晩年の代表作です。 高橋由一 1828‐1894 江戸大手前（現・東京都千代田区）生まれ。父は佐野藩士。狩野派に入門したが、西洋石版画の写実力に感銘を受け洋画を独習。1862年に洋書調所画学局に入り、川上冬崖に学んだ。1866年にワーグマンに入門。1873年に画学場「天絵楼」を開き、定期的に天絵社展を開催した。1876年にはフォンタネージに師事。1877年の内国勧業博覧会、1878年のパリ万国博覧会に出品。1880年に美術雑誌『臥遊席珍』を創刊。1881年より三島通庸の委嘱を受けて、山形や福島、栃木などの新道の記録画を描いた。 |
| Description | At the time Takahashi Yuichi visited Miyagi Prefecture, the lecture hall at Yokendo, a former academic institution of the Sendai domain, was being used as the prefectural office. When constructed in 1817, this lecture hall was of a scale rarely seen in Japan. In later years, in order to utilize the building as a prefectural office, its tatami mats were replaced with wooden planks, its shoji screens with glass doors, and in place of the original Japanese-style gate, an impressive white Western-style gate was erected. In this new landscape portraying the state of modernization, Yuichi combined backlit trees, suggesting the influence of Italian painter Antonio Fontanesi, a follower of the Barbizon school, with the silhouette of a horse-drawn carriage, creating an evocative documentary painting. This painting is representative of Yuichi’s later years, a time when he recognized the realism and a particular aesthetic in Western-style painting and dedicated himself to its spread. |
