作品解説上半分には、鈍く鉛色に輝く画面に大きな「X」の文字のような記号が見えます。「X」はしばしば高山の作品に登場し、交差、バツ、十字架、死など、多様な意味を想起させます。無機質な上半分に対し、下半分には、作者の手の動きを残した有機的で躍動感ある線が描かれ、一つの画面に二つの相反する印象が同居しています。枕木を用いたインスタレーションで知られる高山ですが、並行して様々な技法でドローイングや版画も制作しました。「のっぺらぼう」は、「遊殺」などと並び、高山がよく用いたタイトルで、現代の人間と自然との理不尽な関係性を示唆しています。

高山　登　1944‐2023
東京都豊島区生まれ。1968年、東京藝術大学絵画科油画専攻卒業。1970年、同大学大学院修了。1969年の個展（椿近代画廊、東京）の頃から枕木を用いたインスタレーションを開始。舞踏家の田中泯との共同でも知られる。1981年より宮城教育大学、2006年より東京藝術大学で教鞭を執った。2010年「高山登展　300本の枕木－呼吸する空間」を宮城県美術館で開催。2011年に東京藝術大学退任記念展「枕木―白い闇×黒い闇」を東京藝術大学大学美術館で開催。
DescriptionIn the upper half, a large symbol resembling the letter X can be seen against the dim glow of lead color. “X” often appears in Takayama’s work, evoking a variety of meanings, including “cross”, “incorrectness”, “crucifixion”, and “death”. While the upper half is inorganic, the lower half features organic, dynamic lines following the movement of the artist’s hand, creating two opposing impressions that coexist in a single image. Takayama was known for his installations using railroad ties, but he also created drawings and prints using various techniques. Nopperabo—a term referring to a faceless yokai in Japanese folklore— is a title Takayama often used, along with Yusatsu, alluding to the irrational relationship between modern humans and nature.
