作品解説休憩中と思われる三人の労働者が、画面いっぱいに描かれています。
大沼かねよは宮城県栗原郡岩ヶ崎町（現・栗原市）生まれ。上京後浅草で小学校勤務のかたわら制作を行い、帝国美術院展覧会（帝展）等に出品しました。本作は、作者が日常目にしていた光景を題材にしたものですが、こうした社会的な主題を大画面に堂々と構成して描いた大沼は、男性社会であった当時の画壇で、「女流とは思えない」と高く評価されました。
大沼は戦中に早逝したこともあって、一時忘れられた存在となりましたが、近代美術史を再評価するなかで、再び注目されています。

大沼かねよ　1905‐1939
宮城県栗原郡岩ヶ崎町生まれ。1928年、東京女子高等師範学校（現・お茶の水女子大学）図画専修科卒業。翌年より教職の傍ら石川寅治に師事した。1930年に第11回帝展に初出品。1932年に新写実派に参加し、第1回新美術団体連盟展に出品。1936年、文部省美術展覧会鑑査展に出品。労働者の生活を写実的に描き、後に平面的な表現へと変化を見せるも、急逝した。

Onuma Kaneyo was born in Iwagasaki-machi, Kurihara District, Miyagi Prefecture (now Kurihara City). After moving to Tokyo, she worked at an elementary school in Asakusa while creating her artwork and exhibited her work at exhibitions such as the Imperial Academy Fine Arts Exhibition (Teiten). This piece is based on scenes that the artist saw every day; Onuma’s bold composition of such a socially-charged theme on a large canvas won high praise in the art world, a male-dominated field at the time, with some commenting that it was hard to believe it was made by a woman.
Perhaps due to her early death during the war, Onuma was forgotten for a period of time, but she has once again attracted attention as modern art history is reevaluated.
