DescriptionGiyaman (part of the original Japanese title) refers to glassware that came to Japan with the introduction of Christianity. Surrounding a girl sitting calmly by the harbor are plates and vases made of glass. A bridge spans the harbor, and men in Western attire and a woman holding a parasol stroll along it, a church-like building visible in the distance. In 1914, the year Yumeji painted this piece, he opened a shop called Minatoya with his girlfriend, Kishi Tamaki. There, they sold Yumeji’s products, such as picture books, poetry collections, cards, chiyogami paper, and han-eri collars for kimono; the shop was hugely popular with young women. Yet the exotic atmosphere Yumeji depicts seems somehow sad. His paintings depict the tragedies of Christians and the people crying in the shadows of the splendor of European culture, overlapping with the social climate of the time.
