作品解説描かれるのは、川が二股に分かれる地点。牛を連れた農夫が対岸へと渡ろうとしています。岸辺の岩や遠景の山は水墨淡彩の筆を重ねて造形され、岸辺に生い茂る柳の大木の枝葉を描き出すのは、スケッチに用いるような素早く流れる線です。
東西の写生画法を学んだ平福百穂は、その場の空気感をも写し取るスケッチ力で、挿絵画家としても活躍しました。また、大正時代に日本画家5人で金鈴社を結成し、そこでは自身の自然観察の経験と重ねて古画への理解を深め、表現の幅を広げました。本作のような筆勢を生かした風景描写は金鈴社時代に生まれた作風の一つで、近代における新しい南画とも評されました。

平福百穂　1877‐1933　
秋田県角館町（現・仙北市角館）生まれ。父は円山派の画家穂庵(すいあん)。川端玉章に入門し、東京美術学校（現・東京藝術大学）でも学ぶ。无声会(むせいかい)で自然主義的写生観を追究の後、珊瑚会、金鈴社で活動。古画研究を経て、筆技の即興性と装飾性を併せ持つ写生画の新境地を拓いた。挿絵画家、アララギ歌人、帝国美術院展覧会（帝展）審査員。秋田蘭画研究の功績もある。
DescriptionDepicted is a point where a river forks. A farmer leads his cattle across to the opposite bank. The rocks on the shore, as well as the mountains in the distance, are sculpted with layered brushstrokes of ink and wash, while the branches and leaves of the large willow trees growing along the shore have been rendered in quick, flowing lines, reminiscent of those used in sketches.
Having studied both Eastern and Western sketching techniques, Hirafuku Hyakusui, known for his ability to sketch in a way that captured the atmosphere of a given location, also began to work as an illustrator. In the Kinreisha group, established in the Taisho era by five Japanese-style painters, Hyakusui broadened his range of expression by combining his understanding of ancient paintings with his own experiences of observing nature. Depictions of landscapes which make use of brushstrokes, such as this piece, were of a style that emerged around this time, and have been praised as a new form of modern Nanga (Southern School) painting.
