作品解説ある環境にあわせて、あるいはそこにあることで成立する美術があります。南北に向ってまっすぐに伸びる8本の白い柱、その間を縫うように流れる水路、水は最後にケヤキの古木をまわり、また循環して流れます。そのなかで一本の柱だけが、斜めを向いています。これは正確に南北を指していて、毎日正午の影を真鍮の板に落とします。そこには影の長さで季節がわかるような目盛りがあります。自然や季節のたえまない循環、そこにカラヴァンは日本のありようを見たのでしょう。さらに目盛りには、8月6日の日に印がしてあります。広島への原爆投下の日を記したカラヴァンの思いがそこにあります。

ダニ・カラヴァン　1930‐2021
建国前のイスラエルのテルアビブに生まれる。テルアビブとエルサレムで美術を学んだ後、1956年、フィレンツェの美術学院でフレスコ画の技法を習得。翌年帰国し、建築に組み込まれた作品や舞台装置などを制作。1960年代以降から、大規模な公共作品を手掛け、1963年、カラヴァン独自のシンボリックでモニュメンタルな作品スタイルを生みだした。
DescriptionSome art adapts to a certain environment, or comes into existence because of its presence in that environment. Eight white pillars extend in a straight line from north to south, a waterway weaving between them. The water eventually flows around an old zelkova tree before recirculating. Among the pillars, only one faces diagonally. It accurately points toward the north and south, and casts a shadow on a brass plate each day at noon. There is a scale on the plate which indicates the season by the length of the shadow. Perhaps in the constant cycle of nature and the seasons, Karavan saw the nature of Japan. The scale also bears a marking for August 6th. This reflects Karavan’s thoughts as he commemorated the day an atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima.
