| 作品解説 | 本作制作のきっかけは、荘司福が美術講師をしていた三島学園女子大学（現・東北生活文化大学）に公演に来た人形劇団です。劇団員の無心に役になり切る様や、休憩の合間の、ふと我に返りそれぞれの想いに沈む姿が、福の心に印象強く刻まれたといいます。 戦後間もない、画壇で日本画の在り方が厳しく問われたこの頃、福はピカソ、マティス、メキシコのディエゴ・リベラなど海外美術に表現上の示唆を求めました。劇団の取材とスケッチを重ね、幾何学的な形象と重く鮮烈な色づかいで構成された本作からは、群像表現への理知的な取り組みも見て取れます。 荘司福 1910‐2002 長野県松本市生まれ。女子美術専門学校（現・女子美術大学）で日本画を学び、卒業後、宮城県仙台市へ嫁いだ。1941年、第6回東北美術展に《子供たち》を出品して初入選。郷倉千靭に師事し、宮城で中村爽歩らと絵画研究団体を結成。1964年日本美術院同人。35年間住んだ東北の歴史文化から「祈り」や「とき」などのテーマを見出した。 |
| Description | The inspiration for this piece came from a puppet theater troupe that came to perform at Mishima Gakuen Women’s College (currently Tohoku Seikatsu Bunka University), where Shoji Fuku was an art instructor. Fuku said she was deeply impressed by the way the members of the troupe had immersed themselves in their roles, and suddenly came to their senses during intermission, sinking into their own thoughts. Shortly after the war, at a time when Japanese-style painting was being relentlessly called into question in the art world, Fuku pursued expressive inspiration from overseas artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Mexico’s Rivera. This piece, created by researching and sketching the theater troupe and composed of geometric shapes and heavy, vivid colors, also shows an intellectual approach to the depiction of a group of people. |
