DescriptionSuddenly rejected by the government-sponsored contemporary Japanese art exhibition (Bunten), with which he had previously enjoyed success, Otake Chikuha experienced a hardship in the art world. Along with his students, he held the Hakkasha Exhibition, demonstrating diverse artistic styles with technical prowess. This triptych of paintings depicts the light and temperature of celestial bodies, through geometric forms made of intersecting lines and colors. It draws on the Futurist style that had spread to Japan from the West during the Taisho era.
According to a press article from the time, this piece portrays the moonlight that nourishes the earth, the sun’s heat that nurtures plants and people, and the starlight in the deep darkness that weighs on the human, and is said to express his outlook on life. This masterpiece also expresses Chikuha’s robust creative desire, absorbing perspectives on life that were prevalent in the Taisho era.
