作品解説ディヴァン・ジャポネは日本の長椅子という意味の飲食店で、日本風の内装で、歌や踊りを楽しむことができました。本作は、このお店のために制作されたポスターであり、中央には、観客席に座るジャヌ・アヴリルが描かれています。ジャヌは、モンマルトルにあるムーラン・ルージュというダンスホールで人気を博した踊り子で、ロートレックの親友でもありました。ステージ上には黒い手袋がトレードマークだった歌手、イヴェット・ギルベールが描かれています。首から上が大胆にトリミングされており、こうした鑑賞者の想像をかきたてる臨場感のある描写は、ロートレックの得意技でした。

アンリ・ド・トゥールーズ＝ロートレック　1864‐1901
フランスのタルヌ県アルビ生まれ。伯爵家の嫡子として生まれ、幼少期から画才を発揮した。2度の事故で左脚と大腿骨を骨折し両脚の成長が止まる。ルネ・プランストー、レオン・ボナ、フェルナン・コルモンらに学ぶ。モンマルトルに住み、歌手やダンサー、俳優、芸人、娼婦など、パリに生きる人々を描いた。
DescriptionThe Divan Japonais, meaning “Japanese divan (a piece of couch-like furniture)”, was a restaurant with Japanese-style décor where people could enjoy song and dance. This piece is a poster that was created for the restaurant, depicting Jane Avril in the center, seated in the audience. Jane was a popular dancer at the Moulin Rouge dance hall in Montmartre, and close friend of Toulouse-Lautrec. The poster depicts singer Yvette Guilbert, known for her trademark black gloves, on the stage. Her figure is boldly cropped from the neck up, and this kind of vivid, immersive depiction that stimulates the imagination of the viewer was Toulouse-Lautrec’s specialty.
