| Description | The gates of a walled town on the banks of a large river have opened, and residents have poured out one after another. They are headed for the expanse of goods spread out by merchants who have disembarked from a sailing ship that has just arrived. This fairytale-like scene evokes Kandinsky’s homeland of Russia in medieval times. The figures of people and buildings are formed by the scattering of opaque colored spots over a dark background. Each color coexists while maintaining its own vividness, creating a unique atmosphere in which time seems to stop, and which invites the viewer into a rich fantasy. This is one of Kandinsky’s early masterpieces that fully utilizes a sensibility of color that is somewhat distinct from that of Western European painters. |
