| 作品解説 | 表面の起伏は、糊を混ぜた下地を薄い紙に塗ることで生まれています。強く刻み付けられた線は、互いに交差することなく、直角に曲がったり大きく折り返したりしています。タイトルの「ラトミー」とは、イタリアのシチリア島にある、古代の石切り場の遺跡のこと。クレーも妻と旅行で訪れたことがあります。石切り場では、人間が石を切り出すことで、岩肌の上に幾何学的な線が刻みつけられますが、そうした光景に本作を重ねているようです。 1939年、亡くなる前年のクレーは、病による体の不調に悩まされながらも、人生で最も多くの作品を生み出しました。 |
| Description | An undulating surface has been created by applying an undercoat mixed with paste to thin paper. The strongly carved-out lines never intersect one another; at some points they bend at right angles, while at others they make sharp turns. Klee named this work Latomie, which is the name of the remains of an ancient quarry on the Italian island of Sicily. Klee visited the area himself on a trip with his wife. This piece seems to superimpose upon a scene often seen in quarries, in which humans have carved geometric lines into organic rock surfaces. It was painted in 1939, the year before Klee’s death. Despite suffering from poor health during that year, Klee produced the most prolific work of his life. |
