作品解説パリを舞台としたカンディンスキー晩年の作品には、この地の芸術家との交流や自然科学への関心を通じて、微生物のような変則的な形体がよく登場します。また「複雑と単純」「分割と結合」など、相反する概念の共存がしばしば主題となりました。
本作品もその一種。画家自身の解説によれば、左右の垂直軸が支える「型通りの動きのない構成」の堅苦しさを、すみれ色の円と赤い四角形の間の対角線上の緊張関係が緩和します。さらに、動物や楽器を連想させる「自由な形態」や、画面下部のくさび形が緊張を和らげるために、「活気ある安定」が成立しています。
DescriptionKandinsky’s later works, set in Paris, often feature irregular forms resembling microorganisms, a result of his interactions with local artists and his interest in natural science. The coexistence of opposing concepts such as “complexity and simplicity” or “division and combination” were also frequent themes.
This piece is one such example. According to the artist himself, the diagonal tension between the violet circle and red square eases the rigidity of the “stiff, schematic composition” supported by vertical axes on either side. Furthermore, the “free forms” reminiscent of animals and musical instruments, as well as the wedge shape at the bottom of the piece, relieve this tension, creating “animated stability”.
