作品解説本作を描いたワーグマンは幕末に雑誌の特派員、報道画家として来日したイギリス人です。素描や風刺画を得意とし、油彩画も描きましたが、油彩画の腕前については不明な点が多く、本作も手堅く穏健な作品という評価に落ち着くでしょう。彼の作品には報道画家としての意識からか、日本の人々の姿が描かれることが多くありますが、本作は朝の清々しい景色のみで人物は登場しません。余計なことを意識せず、純粋に描きたい風景を描いた作品なのかもしれません。ワーグマンは、日本洋画の黎明期に、日本人に西洋絵画の技術を直接伝えた人物としてよく知られています。

チャールズ・ワーグマン　1835‐1891
ロンドン生まれ。1861年、『イラストレイテッド・ロンドン・ニューズ』の報道画家として来日。翌年、横浜で『ザ・ジャパン・パンチ』を創刊、日本各地を取材し風刺漫画などを掲載した。一方で西洋絵画の素養があったことから、五姓田義松や高橋由一に指導を行うなど、日本洋画史にとって重要な存在であった。
DescriptionWirgman, the creator of this piece, was an Englishman who came to Japan at the end of the Edo period as a magazine correspondent and reportage artist. He specialized in sketches and caricatures, and while he also produced oil paintings, much is unknown about his skill in this area, and this piece can also be best described as solid and sensible. Perhaps because he was conscious of his work as a reportage artist, many of his pieces depict Japanese people, but this piece depicts only a refreshing morning scene with no one around. This piece may portray a landscape the artist simply wanted to paint, without being overly concerned about anything unnecessary. Wirgman is well-known as someone who directly introduced Western painting techniques to the Japanese people at the dawn of Western-style painting in Japan.
