作品解説建畠覚造の彫刻は、いつも“不思議”です。そしていつもとまどいを覚えます。それは題名にもあらわれています。“オルガン”には楽器の「オルガン」や「機関」、そして「臓器」という意味があります。でも、このどれにもしっくりはきません。あえて言うなら腸のような臓器でしょうか。それにしては、硬くてピカピカしたアルミニウムの素材は似合いません。作者は私たちの先入観をあえて裏切っているのです。慣れてしまった感情からは、発見が生まれないことを私たちに示しているのです。この作品を見て、思わず首をかしげてしまったなら、あなたに建畠覚造のメッセージが届いたということなのです。

建畠覚造　1919‐2006
東京都北豊島郡日暮里町（現・荒川区）に生まれる。1941年、東京美術学校（現・東京藝術大学）彫刻科に入学、その年に文部省美術展覧会（新文展）に入選し、特選を受賞する。当初から抽象的造形をめざした建畠は、1950年代から、幾何学的な造形や、金属などを積極的に使用し、日本の抽象彫刻を牽引する。その後もさまざまな素材を使い、二律背反するものの対立と共存の関係をユーモラスな造形を用いて表現した。
DescriptionTatehata Kakuzo’s sculptures are always mysterious, and always leave the viewer feeling bewildered. This is reflected in the title of this piece. “Organ” could mean a musical instrument, an institution, or an internal organ. However, none of these seem to fit. If we must describe it so, perhaps it would be an intestine-like organ. The hard, shiny aluminum material does not suit this image. The artist deliberately subverts our preconceptions. This piece shows us that our habitual ways of seeing do not lead to discovery.
