| 作品解説 | 亡霊のようにたたずむ落ち武者。なかば開けた口もとから、彼は何か言おうとしています。その言葉は、彫刻の後ろに回ってみるとわかります。「いえずすさんたまりあ 寛永十五年如月二十八日原の城本丸にて没」という文字が鎧の背面に刻まれています。寛永14（1637）年秋、幕府による激しいキリシタン弾圧に耐えかねた信徒たちは、まだ十代半ばの天草四郎を中心に、島原の原城に立てこもりました。この島原・天草の乱で、総大将の四郎が討ち死にした日が寛永15年2月28日なのです。3万を超える信徒たちは老人から子供まで、幕府軍によってみな殺されたといいます。敬虔なカトリック信者であった舟越は、この痛ましい殉教の歴史を幻となった老兵に語らせているのです。 舟越保武 1912‐2002 岩手県二戸郡小鳥谷村（現・一戸町）に生まれる。17歳のときに読んだ高村光太郎の『ロダンの言葉』に感銘し、彫刻家を志す。1934年、東京美術学校（現・東京藝術大学）彫刻科に入学。1939年、柳原義達、佐藤忠良らとともに新制作派協会（現・新制作協会）彫刻部を創立。父がクリスチャンであったことから、幼少よりキリスト教を信仰し、1950年、盛岡カトリック教会にて正式に受洗する。1962年、《長崎26殉教者記念像》を制作。1964年にはローマ法王パウロ6世に拝謁した。 |
| Description | A defeated warrior stands still like a ghost. His mouth, half-open, makes him seem as though he is about to say something. You can see his words by looking at the back of the sculpture. Inscribed on the back of the armor are the words “Jesus Santa Maria, died the 28th of February, 1638, in the inner bailey of Hara Castle”. In autumn 1637, unable to endure brutal persecution by the shogunate, Christians, led by Amakusa Shiro, who was still in his mid-teens, barricaded themselves in Hara Castle in Shimabara. February 28th, 1638 was the day commander Shiro was killed in battle during the Shimabara-Amakusa Rebellion. It is said that more than 30,000 believers, from the elderly to children, were killed by shogunate forces. Funakoshi, a devout Catholic, has a phantom veteran narrate this tragic history of martyrdom. |
