作品解説1976年、北海道釧路市を象徴する幣舞橋に、四季をテーマにした作品が設置されました。作者は舟越保武、柳原義達、本郷新そして佐藤忠良の四人の彫刻家です。誰がどの季節にするかはくじ引きで決め、佐藤には夏が当たりました。気心の知れあった四人は、たがいに相談しながら統一感のある四季の彫像をつくりました。女性は左手を天に向けて、降りそそぐ夏の光を受けています。手のひらには太陽の光が反射し、横を向いた眼差しはまぶしそうです。短いシャツは風になびき、からだ全体をさわやかな風が吹き抜けていきます。釧路の夏空や青い海を背景に、のびやかに立つ姿を想像してみませんか。

佐藤　忠良　1912‐2011
宮城県黒川郡落合村舞野(現・大和町)に生まれ、幼少期を北海道の夕張町(現・夕張市)で過ごした。1939年に東京美術学校(現・東京藝術大学)の彫刻科塑造部を卒業、新制作派協会(現・新制作協会)の彫刻部創設に参加。従軍、シベリア抑留を経て復員。1981年フランス国立ロダン美術館の招きで個展を開催。1990年、宮城県美術館に佐藤忠良記念館が開館した。
DescriptionIn 1976, four sculptures themed on the seasons were installed on Nusamai Bridge, a symbol of Kushiro City, Hokkaido. They were created by four sculptors: Funakoshi Yasutake, Yanagihara Yoshitatsu, Hongo Shin, and Sato Churyo. They drew lots to see which person would represent which season, and Sato was selected to represent summer. The four, who were close friends, consulted with one another to create unified sculptures of the four seasons. The woman holds her left hand up to the sky, catching the summer sunlight that pours down upon her. The sunlight reflects off of her palm, and she seems to be dazzled, her gaze turned to the side. Her short shirt flutters in the wind, sending a refreshing breeze across her body. Can you imagine her standing gracefully against the backdrop of Kushiro City’s summer sky and blue sea?
