DescriptionThe model for this piece was Sato’s friend, the poet Okamoto Takashi, who was from Gunma Prefecture. However, layers of feelings for many different people are contained within this work. Because an acquaintance with whom he had cooked meals together during junior high school, as well as a soldier who had served alongside him during the war, were from Gunma Prefecture, Sato felt a certain connection to Gunma, and it became a fixation of his. The kindness, strength, and perseverance of the people Sato had encountered throughout his life, which he sought to express through this bust, resonated with people after the war, and was later described as having “marked a milestone in modern Japanese sculpture”. It became one of Sato’s masterpieces.
