作品解説当時の若者たちがジーンズ姿で歩いているの見て、佐藤は「硬い木綿と肉体とが織りなす皺の起伏が呼吸しているように」見えたといいます。《ジーパン》という作品にはじまり、ジーンズ姿の女性像は20体ほど制作されました。本作もそうした意識で作られたもので、右脚に重心を置き、首を右に傾け、腰を右方向に張り出し、上半身が緩やかな曲線を描いています。腰に添えられた右手もまた右方向に孤を描き、写実的な表現というよりは大胆な身体の操作が行われています。

佐藤　忠良　1912‐2011
宮城県黒川郡落合村舞野(現・大和町)に生まれ、幼少期を北海道の夕張町(現・夕張市)で過ごした。1939年に東京美術学校(現・東京藝術大学)の彫刻科塑造部を卒業、新制作派協会(現・新制作協会)の彫刻部創設に参加。従軍、シベリア抑留を経て復員。1981年フランス国立ロダン美術館の招きで個展を開催。1990年、宮城県美術館に佐藤忠良記念館が開館した。
DescriptionSato saw young people of the time walking around in jeans and said that it seemed to him that “the undulating wrinkles created by the interweaving of stiff cotton and flesh seemed to breathe”. Beginning with a piece called Jeans, he went on to create about 20 statues of women wearing jeans. This piece was created with this same awareness, placing the figure’s weight on the right leg, with her neck tilted to the right and hips jutting out to the right, all creating a gentle curve to the upper body. The right hand, resting on her hip, also forms an arc to the right, showing bold manipulation of the body rather than remaining realistic in expression.
