作品解説開館以来北庭に設置されている新宮晋の《時の旅人》は、当館の屋外彫刻の中で最も背が高い作品です。黄色と白に塗られた特徴的な羽が自然の風を受けてクルクルと回る「動く彫刻」としてもおなじみですが、その素材は金属であり、羽は1枚当たり500kg近い重さがあります。けれども軽快に回る姿からその重さは感じられず、むしろ軽々とした印象を受けるのではないでしょうか。新宮は、自らの彫刻について「目に見えない自然のエネルギーを見せる装置」であると述べていますが、本作もその自在な動きによって北庭を渡る風の姿を見せてくれます。

新宮　晋　1937‐
大阪府豊中市生まれ。1960年、東京藝術大学絵画科を卒業後、イタリア政府奨学生としてローマ国立美術学校で絵画を学ぶ。1966年に初めて立体作品を手掛け、帰国後は、一貫して風や水といった自然のエネルギーで動く彫刻を発表し、高く評価される。野外彫刻の設置や国内外での個展開催、様々なアートプロジェクトへの参加のほか、絵本、ミュージカルなど幅広い活動を続けている。
DescriptionShingu Susumu’s Time Traveler, which has been an installation in the North Garden since the museum’s opening, is its tallest outdoor sculpture. While it is well-known as a moving sculpture, as its distinctive yellow and white wings spin in the natural wind, it is constructed of metal, and each blade weighs nearly 500 kilograms. However, their weight is not apparent as they spin so nimbly, giving the impression of being rather light. Shingu describes his sculptures as “devices that display the invisible energy of nature”, and this piece, with its free-flowing movement, also shows the wind as it blows across the North Garden.
