作品解説古風な内裏雛とランプが和箪笥の上に置かれています。男雛は、まるで話しかけるかのように、自然な雰囲気で女雛の方に体を向けています。また、女雛の傍には桃の花ではなく、パンジーの花が飾られています。描かれた物たちは各々存在を主張しつつ、互いに関わりあって、一つの画面として見事にまとまっています。周囲から「静物学者」と称された、という杉村の面目躍如たる作品です。杉村は、ランプや人形などの愛着あるモチーフを、重厚な筆触と温かみのある画風で繰り返し描きました。本作で、1983年の第15回日本美術展覧会（日展）文部大臣賞を受賞しています。

杉村　惇　1907-2001
東京市牛込区（現・東京都新宿区）生まれ。1932年、東京美術学校（現・東京藝術大学）卒業。在学中の1930年に帝国美術院展覧会初入選。1945年に仙台、次いで塩竃に疎開し、戦後も留まった。静物画を得意とし、1950年代以降は、黒い輪郭線を用いた重厚な画風を見せた。1965年頃に塩竃から仙台へ移り、宮城教育大学で教鞭を執った。日展に出品を続けたほか、宮城県内の美術団体の運営にも尽力した。
DescriptionAn old-fashioned pair of dairi-bina dolls and a lamp are placed upon a Japanese chest of drawers. The male doll faces the female doll with a natural air, as though speaking to her. In addition, rather than the usual peach blossoms, pansies are displayed next to the female doll. While each of the depicted objects asserts its own presence, they also interact with one another, creating a beautiful unity as a single painting. This piece truly embodies Sugimura’s reputation as a “master of still life”. Sugimura repeatedly painted beloved motifs like lamps and dolls with thick brushstrokes and a warm style. This piece won him the Minister of Education Award at the 15th Japan Fine Arts Exhibition (Nitten) in 1983.
