作品解説宮城県刈田郡白石町（現・白石市）生まれの宮城輝夫は、戦前、東京で超現実主義系の美術グループに参加し、戦後は宮城県内で前衛美術運動を牽引しました。
本作品には、コーヒー豆の袋等に使われる目の粗い麻布が使われており、その質感を活かしたニュアンスのある色彩を背景に、幾何学的な形体で構成された、機械のような異形の生き物が描かれています。エロスとユーモア、ペーソスの交り合う夢幻的な世界観が展開される一方、画面には金属部品も貼り付けられており、三次元のオブジェとしての実在感も併せ持つ作品です。こうした一連の作品が瀧口修造や針生一郎等の評論家から高く評価されました。

宮城輝夫　1912‐2002
宮城県刈田郡白石町（現・白石市）生まれ。1929年に上京し、川端画学校、次いで川口軌外に学んだ。1934年に第4回独立美術協会展に初出品。1937年に新造型美術協会に参加し、前衛写真協会の結成に参加。終戦後は郷里に現代美術研究所を開設し、1953年に仙台で「エスプリ・ヌウボオ」の結成に参加。翌年、新象作家協会創立に参加。1959年に第３回シェル美術展でシェル美術賞を受賞、同年より無所属となった。幻想的かつ諧謔に富む画風で知られ、仙台を拠点に地域の前衛美術をけん引した。
DescriptionMiyagi Teruo was born in the town of Shiroishi, Katta District, Miyagi Prefecture (now Shiroishi City). Before the war, he participated in a surrealist art group in Tokyo. After the war, he led the avant-garde movement in Miyagi Prefecture.
This piece uses coarse burlap, of the kind used for bags of coffee beans, and depicts a bizarre mechanical creature composed of geometric shapes against a background of nuanced colors which bring out the texture of the cloth. While the work presents a dreamlike worldview, in which eros, humor, and pathos intertwine, there are also metal parts attached to the canvas which give it a sense of reality as a three-dimensional object. This series of works was highly praised by critics such as Takiguchi Shuzo and Hariu Ichiro.
