| 作品解説 | 猫の髭が片方しかないのは、遅筆だった上に、実物を眼の前にしないと描けないという作者が、この絵を描くのに何年もかかってしまい、その間に猫が死んでしまったから。洲之内徹によって紹介されたこの逸話によって、人気となった作品です。 薄いグレーと赤の鮮やかな対比、楕円形にまとめられた猫の形等、無駄のない簡潔な構成は、丁寧に描かれた愛猫の存在感を引き立て、画家とモデルの時間を結晶化したような、詩的な世界を創り上げています。作者が対象を見つめ、捉えようとしたのは、眼の前の現実が垣間見せる神秘的な美の世界でした。 長谷川潾二郎 1904‐1988 北海道函館区（現・函館市）生まれ。3人の兄弟はみな作家で、自らも探偵小説家としての一面を持つ。1924年に上京。川端画学校で学ぶも退学し、独学で油彩を学んだ。1931年から翌年まで滞仏し、帰国後は4年連続で二科展に出品。戦後は団体展から遠ざかり、東京で個展を開催する傍ら、装幀や挿絵なども手がけた。実物を目の前にしなければ描けない、遅筆で寡作な画家であったが、平明な風景画や静物画が福島繁太郎や洲之内徹らに愛された。 |
| Description | The cat only has whiskers on one side of its face because the artist was a slow painter, and could only paint the real thing if it was visible in front of him. Because of this, it took years to paint this piece, and the cat passed away in the meantime. This anecdote, which was presented by Sunouchi Toru, made this work popular. The sparing and simple composition, with its vivid contrast between light gray and red, as well as the oval shape of the cat, accentuates the presence of the beloved feline, carefully painted, and creates a poetic world which seems to crystallize the time between the artist and his model. What the artist sought to capture as he looked upon his subject was a world of mysterious beauty, glimpsed within the reality before his eyes. |
