| 作品解説 | 強い光を受け暗闇から浮かび上がるのは、眉をひそめる男の顔。深い影のせいで、目元の表情は読み取れませんが、半開きの口元は何か言いたげにも見えます。 レンブラントへの傾倒がうかがえる本作品は、37歳で生涯を終えた中村彜の22歳頃の自画像です。1909年、ドイツで発行されたレンブラントの画集を丸善で購入した中村は、高価だったその本を、手垢で黒くなるほど熱心に見ていたといい、この頃、自画像が集中して制作されました。彼はレンブラント絵画の深い精神性にも共感しており、本作品でも鋭く内省的な世界が表されています。 中村 彝 1887‐1924 茨城県東茨城郡水戸上市（現・水戸市）生まれ。上京して軍人を志すも肺結核のため断念。画家志望となり1906年に白馬会研究所、翌年太平洋画会研究所で学んだ。1909年に第3回文展に初出品し、翌年、翌々年には第3等受賞。1911年から1915年まで新宿中村屋裏のアトリエに住んだ。レンブラントやルノワールなどの影響を受けつつ、対象の「内なる生命」に迫る表現を模索。肖像や自画像に佳作を残した。 |
| Description | From the darkness, a man’s frowning face emerges, bathed in strong light. Deep shadows make reading the expression in his eyes impossible, but his half-open mouth also makes it seem as though he wants to say something. This piece, which reveals Nakamura Tsune’s devotion to Rembrandt van Rijn, is a self-portrait of him at around age 22; Nakamura died at the age of 37. In 1909, Nakamura purchased a German-published collection of Rembrandt’s art at Maruzen Book Store. He is said to have perused this expensive book so intently that it became well-thumbed , and it was during this time that he concentrated on producing self-portraits. He also sympathized with the deep spirituality found in Rembrandt’s paintings, and this piece expresses a piercing, introspective world. |
