作品解説強靱なマチエールで描かれたのは、固い地面や円い土管、うねる蛇腹のホース、そして蓋を開けたマンホールです。
曹良奎は、李承晩政権下の韓国で反体制者として追われ、日本に密航、東京深川の朝鮮人居住区に住み倉庫の番人等をしていたといいます。曹は自身が見た社会の不条理、なかでも朝鮮特需に沸く日本の繁栄の陰で搾取され、抑圧された労働者たちを、垂直に立ちはだかる倉庫の壁や、地面に穿たれたマンホールとともに描きました。
本作品では、労働者の存在は暗示され、マンホールの黒々とした穴が「資本主義社会の暗黒面」を象徴しています。

曹　良奎　1928‐
朝鮮慶尚南道晋州（現・大韓民国）生まれ。1947年、晋州師範学校卒業。1948年、反体制者として追われ日本に密航。武蔵野美術学校（現・武蔵野美術大学）で学んだが、1952年に中退。1953年に東京のタケミヤ画廊で初個展を開催。1955年より自由美術家協会会員。マンホールや倉庫などをモチーフに、労働者の現実を象徴的に描いた。1961年に朝鮮民主主義人民共和国に帰国した。
DescriptionHard ground, a round clay pipe, an undulating corrugated hose, and an open manhole are painted with strong material effect.
Cho Yan-gyu was persecuted as a dissident under the Syngman Rhee regime in Korea, and stowed away to Japan, where he lived in a Korean residential area in Fukagawa, Tokyo, working as a warehouse guard, among other jobs. Cho depicted the social absurdity he witnessed, particularly the exploited and oppressed workers living in the shadows of Japan’s prosperity fueled by the Korean War, alongside towering warehouse walls and manholes opened in the ground.
In this piece, the presence of workers is implied, with the deep black hole of the manhole symbolizing the dark side of capitalist society.
