| 作品解説 | 前田寛治は大正から昭和の初めにかけて活躍した洋画家です。病により若くして亡くなったため、画家としての活動は長いものではありませんでしたが、彼の質感や実在感に基づいた独自の写実表現は、同時代の画家たちに大きな影響を与えました。木々の間から眺めた郊外の景色が表された本作は、フランス滞在中に描かれた可能性が高い作品です。留学中の前田は、フォーヴィスムやキュビスムといった新たな潮流も含め様々な研究に努めました。最終的にクールベのレアリスムから強い影響を受けた写実理論へと向かった前田ですが、本作にはその過渡期ともいえる表現が見て取れ、彼の留学成果の一端を示す貴重な作品のひとつといえるでしょう。 前田 寛治 1896‐1930 鳥取県東伯郡中北条村(現・北栄町)生まれ。1915年上京し、白馬会葵橋洋画研究所で学んだ後、東京美術学校（現・東京藝術大学）西洋画科に入学。卒業後はフランスへ留学して絵画研究へ熱心に取り組んだほか、同時期に渡仏していた日本人画家たちと親しく交友した。1925年に帰国すると、留学の成果として第6回帝国美術展覧会に出品した作品が特選となる。翌年には一九三〇年協会の創立に参加し、既成団体の枠を超えた活動を展開した。 |
| Description | Maeta Kanji was a Western-style painter who was active from the Taisho era through the early Showa era. His career as an artist was not long, as he passed away young due to illness, but his unique realistic expression, based in texture and a sense of reality, had major influence on his contemporaries. This piece, which depicts a suburban landscape as viewed through the trees, was likely painted during Maeta’s stay in France. While he was studying abroad, Maeta pursued various areas of research, including new trends such as Fauvism and Cubism. While he ultimately turned to a realist theory, heavily influenced by the realism of Courbet, this piece shows a transitional period in his expression, making it a valuable example of the results of his studies abroad. |
