| 作品解説 | 1932年の3月、画家に三女が誕生したことが契機となって、本作は制作されました。 屏風と、レンギョウの入った花瓶、そして母子が横たわる大小の布団のみが描かれる簡潔な構成です。この静謐な画面の中で唯一の動きである母親の嬰児へ向ける目線は、没骨描の寝具に対し、黒々とした線でそのまぶたや面貌が表され、強調されています。 幼い頃から読書好きだった太田聴雨は、人物を描くとき、その内なる感情をも描出することを目指しました。画家としての再出発を決意して日本美術院展に挑んだ聴雨は、当時の日本美術院で流行していた線描表現を一部ながら効果的に取り入れています。 太田聴雨 1896‐1958 仙台市生まれ。本名、栄吉。円山派の手ほどきを受け、大正期に青樹社を立てて活動。1927年より前田青邨に師事。安田靫彦や小林古径にも私淑して新古典主義の線描主体の描法を習得し、《星をみる女性》を代表とする近代的な事象と女性を取り合わせた作品で世評を高めた。1936年、日本美術院同人。1951年から東京藝術大学助教授。 |
| Description | The artist was prompted to create this piece by the birth of his third daughter in March 1932. Its simple composition depicts just a folding screen, a vase of forsythia, and two futons, large and small, upon which lie a mother and child. The only movement in this tranquil scene is the mother’s gaze towards her infant, her eyelids and facial features depicted and emphasized with bold black lines, in contrast to the bedding, rendered with mogu (boneless) painting. Ota Chou loved reading from a young age and aimed to portray the inner emotions of people when he painted them. Chou decided to make a fresh start as a painter and took on the challenge of exhibiting at the Nihon Bijutsuin Exhibition (Inten); this piece effectively incorporates some of the line drawing techniques that were popular at Nihon Bijutsuin at the time. |
