作品解説密度の高い色彩が印象的な本作品は、作者が西ドイツに留学し、西洋の古典技法である卵テンペラと油彩の混合技法を本格的に研究し始めた頃に制作されました。日本の古典的な仏画の「山越阿弥陀図」のかたちをかり、長女のぬいを阿弥陀に見立てて描いたものです。山越阿弥陀図は本来、臨終の儀式に用いられる阿弥陀来迎図のひとつですが、佐藤はこれを「人が死ぬと同時に新たに生まれ変わるという絵画ではないか」と解釈し、生まれたばかりの愛娘を主題にしました。西洋と日本の絵画の伝統を活かして描かれた、幻想的な誕生図です。

佐藤一郎　1946‐
宮城県古川市生まれ。宮城県仙台第二高等学校で二宮不二麿の薫陶を受け、東京藝術大学美術学部絵画科油画専攻に入学。1972年に同大学院修士課程を修了し、翌年から1976年まで西ドイツに留学、国立ハンブルク美術大学で、特にテンペラと油彩を併用する古典技法を研究した。日常を混合技法で描き、あらためて人間の視覚を問う絵画が注目されたほか、技法研究の第一人者として、東京藝術大学教授や金沢美術工芸大学大学院専任教授等を務めた。
DescriptionThis piece, with its impressively rich colors, was created around the time the artist was studying in West Germany and had begun to seriously study the classical Western technique of mixing egg tempera and oil paint. The painting borrows the form of the classic Japanese Buddhist painting Amida Coming over the Mountain, depicting Sato’s eldest daughter as Amida. While Amida Coming over the Mountain was originally one of the paintings of Amida ‘coming in welcome’ used in deathbed rites, Sato interpreted it to be “a painting that represents a person being reborn at the same time as their death,” and made his beloved newborn daughter the subject. It is a fantastical illustration of birth that draws on the traditions of both Western- and Japanese-style painting.
