作品解説海老原喜之助は1923年に渡仏、エコール・ド・パリの新進気鋭の画家として注目を集めますが、1933年に帰国しました。
帰国後に描かれた本作品には、パリで「エビハラ・ブルー」と評判になった青を基調とした爽やかな色彩と、くっきりとした陰影による綿密な構成を見ることができます。「ポアソニエール」とは魚売りのことで、フランス語の題名が異国情緒を感じさせる一方、庶民的なテーマが共感を呼びます。
従軍中この作品の複製を眺めて心を救われた洲之内徹が、戦後、実物とめぐり逢った話などから、洲之内コレクションの中でも最も知られた一点となりました。

海老原喜之助　1904‐1970
鹿児島市生まれ。1922年に上京。川端画学校を経て1923年から1933年まで滞仏。藤田嗣治らと交友し、サロン・ドートンヌに出品するなどして注目された。1934年、日動画廊で初個展を開催。1935年の第5回独立美術協会展に清冽な色彩と単純化した形態による《曲馬》を出品し、洋画界に衝撃を与えた。1951年、熊本市に海老原美術研究所を開所。1964年、芸術選奨文部大臣賞を受賞。
DescriptionEbihara Kinosuke traveled to France in 1923, where he attracted attention as an up-and-coming painter with the School of Paris, but then returned to Japan in 1933.
Painted after his return, this piece features refreshing colors, with a base blue that had earned a reputation in Paris as “Ebihara blue”, as well as meticulous composition with sharp shadows. “Poissonnière” means “fish seller”, and while the French title evokes an exotic mood, the painting’s unpretentious theme also evokes empathy.
There is a story that Sunouchi Toru, who had found solace in viewing a reproduction of the painting while serving in the war, later encountered the original after the war, making this one of the best-known pieces in the Sunouchi Collection.
