作品解説その名のとおり、矩形、すなわち長方形が重なっています。ベニヤの合板を支持体として、油絵具をペインティングナイフで厚く塗りこめ、レリーフ状に仕上げられた作品です。山口は、1952年ごろから、本作のような黒地に赤褐色、あるいは黄土色の幾何学的形態を配した絵画を描くようになりました。描かれた長方形の輪郭線は、定規で引いたような直線ではなく、歪んだり膨らんだりと画家の手の動きを感じさせます。ナイフの痕跡が残る表面も相まって、作品全体に温かみのある印象をもたらしています。


山口長男　1902‐1983
朝鮮京城府（現・ソウル特別市）生まれ。1921年、上京して本郷洋画研究所に通う。1927年、東京美術学校（現・東京藝術大学）西洋画科卒業。同年に渡仏し、佐伯祐三らと交流。1930年に帰国し、同年、第18回二科展入選。以後、1963年まで出品。1954年から1974年まで武蔵野美術大学で教鞭を執った。1961年、芸術選奨文部大臣賞を受賞。
DescriptionAs its title suggests, this piece consists of overlapping quadrilaterals. Using plywood as a support, the piece was created by applying thick layers of oil paint with a painting knife, which creates a relief-like effect. Around 1952, Yamaguchi began to create paintings like this one, which featured geometric forms in reddish-brown or ochre set against a black background. The rectangular outlines he painted are not straight, as if made with a ruler, but rather are distorted and bulging, allowing one to sense the movement of the artist’s hand. Coupled with the knife marks remaining on the surface of the painting, the entire piece gives a warm impression.
