作品解説幾重にも重なった淡い色彩に、細く鋭い線が斜めに走っていきます。それは燃え上がる白い炎のようでもあり、飛び立つ鳥の群れにも見えてきます。たしかにその中で黒と赤の色彩がアクセントを放っています。龍起が8歳のときに引っ越した家の隣には、詩人で彫刻家の高村光太郎が住んでいました。その影響で龍起は画家をめざし、光太郎から「内面の必然性」を描く画家とよばれるようになりました。1956年、その光太郎が亡くなったとき、龍起は激しいショックを受けました。以来、龍起の作品は詩人の魂をひきついだように、深い内面の世界を描きつづけ、「魂の画業」とよばれる人生をたどりました。

難波田龍起　1905‐1997
北海道旭川市に生まれ、翌年、東京に移転。1913年、転居した隣家が高村光太郎のアトリエであったことから、文学や美術に目ざめる。1927年、早稲田大学を中退し、画家を志す。戦後、精神的世界を描いた抽象作品を描くようになる。1956年の高村光太郎の死にショックを受け、生と死への思索を深める。1974年に次男を、翌年には長男を亡くすという悲劇にみまわれながら、求道者(ぐどうしゃ)のような画業をまっとうした。
DescriptionThin, sharp lines run diagonally over multiple layers of pale colors. They resemble burning white flames, or a flock of birds taking flight. Among them, shades of black and red certainly add accents. When Tatsuoki was eight years old, he moved into a house that was next to where poet and sculptor Takamura Kotaro lived. Influenced by him, Tatsuoki aimed to become a painter, one whom Kotaro came to call an artist who depicts “the compelling force of the inner self”. When Kotaro passed away in 1956, Tatsuoki had an intense emotional shock. From then on, Tatsuoki’s work continued to depict a deep inner world, as though to carry on the poet’s soul, and he lived a life described as “artistic work of the soul”.
