作品解説粗く素早いタッチで相手の特徴を捉えています。モデルとなった真田久吉と岸田劉生はともに、ゴッホやセザンヌに影響を受けた若い画家たちが1912年に結成した、ヒュウザン会のメンバーでした。
劉生はこの頃、家に訪ねて来た友人をつかまえては絵のモデルをさせたことから、「岸田の首狩り」と恐れられました。本作品は「首狩り」の最初期の一点で、ポスト印象派の影響を示しつつも、色彩を抑え、陰影と量感で対象を捉えることで、実在感を表現しています。この後まもなく劉生は、写実の追求へと進みますが、本作はその転換点に位置する貴重な作例です。

岸田劉生　1891‐1929
東京市京橋区(現・東京都中央区)生まれ。白馬会葵橋洋画研究所で学ぶ。1910年、第4回文部省美術展覧会に初出品。文芸誌『白樺』を通じてポスト印象派を知り、1912年に高村光太郎らとヒュウザン会を結成。1915年には、細密な写実表現を標榜する草土社を結成した。1917年、第4回二科展で二科賞受賞。のちに西洋的写実を離れ、娘の麗子の連作などを通じて「内なる美」を追求。東洋の美へと関心を広げ、1920年代半ば頃からは日本画も手がけた。
DescriptionThe subject’s features have been captured with a rough, quick touch. The model, Sanada Hisakichi, and Kishida Ryusei were both members of Fusiain Society, a group formed in 1912 by young painters who had been influenced by Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cézanne.
Around this time, Ryusei was feared as “Kishida the Head Hunter” for his tendency to grab friends who had come to visit his home and have them model for his paintings. This piece, one of his earliest “headhunting” works, displays the influence of Post-Impressionism, while its subdued colors use of shadows and volume convey a sense of realism. Soon after this, Ryusei began to pursue realism; this piece marks a valuable turning point in his career.
