| 作品解説 | 木にもたれてたたずむ着物姿の女性。薄暗い林を背景に明るい色彩で描かれた横顔からは、気品のあるさわやかな印象を受けます。文部省美術展覧会（文展）の第1回展に入選したこの作品は、もともとは等身大の大きさの全身像として構想されました。しかし画面の下方が思い通りに描けないうちに病気となった渡辺は、画面を切断して上半身を描いた作品として出品、入選を果たしたのでした。この病気療養のため帰省を余儀なくされたことから、渡辺自身はその展覧会を見ることができず、4年間の闘病の末、31歳の若さで亡くなりました。 渡辺亮輔 1880‐1911 宮城県志田郡千石村（現・大崎市）生まれ。1899年、東京美術学校（現・東京藝術大学）西洋画科に入学し、黒田清輝に師事した。在学中から白馬会展に出品し、同校研究科を卒業後、『国民新聞』などに挿絵を描き高い評価を得た。1907年、第1回文展に《樹陰》が入選するも、同年、病気療養のために帰郷。療養中も地元紙『河北新報』に挿絵を寄せるなどしたが、31歳で病没した。 |
| Description | A woman in a kimono leans against a tree. Her profile, painted in bright colors against a dim forest backdrop, gives off a pleasant impression of elegance. This piece, selected for the inaugural government-sponsored contemporary Japanese art exhibition (Bunten), was originally conceived as a life-size, full-body portrait. However, Watanabe fell ill before he could paint the lower part of the painting as he had intended, so he cut the painting and submitted the piece with only the upper half of the body painted, which was then selected for the exhibition. Watanabe was forced to return home to recover from his illness and thus was unable to see the exhibition. After a four-year battle with illness, he passed away at the young age of 31. |
