DescriptionThis horizontal painting depicts a woman lying down in a patch of grass. The scene it portrays is likely that of a break from farmwork, as a sickle for cutting grass has been placed in the foreground. The title suggests that the scene is set during a calm season close to the spring equinox. The Hakuba-kai, a group in which Mayama studied Western-style painting, was centered around painters who had been influenced by Impressionists such as Kuroda Seiki. The use of purple in the shadows of the obi (sash) and apron in this piece is characteristic of the group’s use of shadow, which also earned it the nickname ‘the Purple School’, and shows how Mayama had fully mastered this style of painting. This piece was produced at a time during which he was gaining recognition as a promising Western-style painter, his works having been exhibited at the government-sponsored contemporary Japanese art exhibition (Bunten) numerous times.
