| 作品解説 | 高橋は、画家の留学先がヨーロッパ中心であった当時において、アメリカで絵画を学んだ最初期の日本人のひとりでした。カリフォルニア・スクール・オブ・デザインに通った高橋の成績は優秀で、卒業時には油彩画で金賞を受賞しています。スイカとブドウを描いた本作は帰国後の作品ですが、みずみずしい果物や敷かれた布の質感、光と影によって表された立体感からは、アメリカでも評価された技量の高さがうかがえます。同時期にヨーロッパから帰国した黒田清輝が画壇の中心となっていったのとは対照的に、高橋は知る人ぞ知る存在となっていますが、アメリカから最先端の絵画情報をもたらした重要な画家のひとりと言えます。 高橋 勝蔵 1860‐1917 陸奥国亘理郡（現・宮城県亘理町）に生まれる。1871年、亘理伊達氏の開拓団と共に北海道に移る。日本画家を志して上京した後、1885年に渡米し、サンフランシスコやシカゴで油彩、舞台背景画を学んだ。帰国後は東京で芝山研究所を設立して後進の指導に当たる。第6回明治美術会に滞米中の油彩画及び水彩画を出品し話題となったが、次第に中央画壇から距離を置き、晩年は北海道や故郷の亘理で活動した。 |
| Description | At a time when artists mainly studied abroad in Europe, Takahashi was one of the first Japanese people to study painting in the United States. He excelled at the California School of Design, winning a gold medal in oil painting upon graduating. This painting of a watermelon and grapes was made after he had returned to Japan; the textures of the juicy fruit and the cloth beneath it, as well as the three-dimensional effects created by the use of light and shadow, all suggest the height of his skills that were appreciated even in the United States. In contrast to Kuroda Seiki, who returned to Japan from Europe around the same time, becoming a central figure in the art world, Takahashi remained well-known to only a few, but may be considered one of the most important painters who brought cutting-edge artistic knowledge from the United States. |
