作品解説『ぐりとぐら』は、姉の中川李枝子が作った物語に、当時大学生だった山脇（大村）百合子が絵を描き、福音館書店の「こどものとも」から出版された絵本です。動物や植物が素直な線と色づかいで描かれ、余白がたっぷりと残されています。その絵は、大きなカステラを作って食べる夢のある物語と相まって、物語絵本の創作が始まったばかりの児童文学界に、子どもたちにとって親しみやすいという新たな価値を提示しました。
原画である本作には、絵本では編集によってカットされた絵が見付けられたり、下描きの線が見られたりします。興に乗って絵筆を運ぶ、描き手の心が伝わってくるようです。

山脇（大村）百合子　1941‐2022　
東京生まれ。旧姓、大村。高校生の時、姉の中川李枝子が創作した童話「いやいやえん」の挿絵を描く。以後、姉妹コンビで1963年出版の絵本『ぐりとぐら』をはじめ、多くの童話・絵本を世に出した。様々な児童文学作家の物語にも絵を寄せ、また自身も物語を創作。上智大学フランス語学科を卒業し、外国の絵本や物語の翻訳も手がけた。
DescriptionGuri and Gura is a picture book written by Nakagawa Rieko, older sister of Yamawaki (Omura) Yuriko, who illustrated it as a university student; the book was published by Fukuinkan Shoten’s Kodomo no Tomo picture-book series. Animals and plants are depicted with simple lines and colors, leaving plenty of blank space. These illustrations, coupled with a dreamlike story of making and eating a big castella cake, presented a new value of child-friendliness in the world of children’s literature in post-war Japan, in which the creation of narrative picture books was just beginning.
In this original piece, you can see illustrations that were cut from the picture book during the editing process, as well as rough sketches. The spirit of the artist, as she excitedly moves her paintbrush, comes through.
