作品解説画面の中心を占めるのは、毅然と立つ画家とその家族です。木箱の上には画家の道具、背後に広がる街の風景には、無数の人々の暮らしが描かれています。
本作品を二科展に発表する半年前、松本竣介は雑誌『みづゑ』に掲載された「国防国家と美術」という座談会記事に対し「生きている画家」を寄稿し、慎重に異を唱えました。芸術さえも翼賛体制に組み込もうとする戦時下において、松本が、何によって自分は自分であるのかを問うた自画像を、古典的な様式でモニュメンタルに描き出した背景には、切実な覚悟があったことは間違いありません。

松本竣介　1912‐1948
東京府豊多摩郡渋谷町（現・東京都渋谷区）生まれ。本名、俊介。幼少期を岩手で過ごした。13歳のときに病気のため失聴。1929年に上京。太平洋画会研究所に学び、1935年にNOVA美術協会に参加。同年第22回二科展に初出品。1936年に妻と雑誌『雑記帳』を刊行した。1941年、『みづゑ』に「生きている画家」を寄稿。1943年に新人画会の結成に参加。1947年に自由美術家協会に参加。伸びやかな線描と堅牢な絵肌で街の風景や人物などを描いた。
DescriptionOccupying the center of the painting is the artist, standing resolutely, and his family. Atop a wooden box are the artist’s tools, and a cityscape unfolding in the background depicts the lives of countless people.
Six months before exhibiting this piece at the Nika Exhibition, Matsumoto Shunsuke contributed an article, “Living Painters”, to a roundtable article entitled “The National Defense State and Art” which was published in Mizue magazine, expressing his cautious　disagreement. There is no doubt that behind this monumental, classically-styled self-portrait, painted during wartime, when even art was being incorporated into a pro-war regime, Matsumoto felt a profound resolve, questioning what it was that defined him as himself.
