| 作品解説 | 満谷は画業の前半と後半で大きく画風を変えた画家として知られています。そのきっかけとなったのは、1911年からの二度目のヨーロッパ遊学でした。この時に学んだセザンヌやルノワールの影響は大きく、それまでの徹底した写実表現から、装飾的で詩情豊かな作風へと転じます。文部省美術展覧会（文展）の審査員を務めるなど既に画家としての評価を得ていた満谷の作風の変化は、当時の画壇にも驚きを与えました。渓流の岩場に立つ裸婦を後ろから描いた本作は画風を変えた後の作品で、輪郭線の片側をぼかした量感の表現などにこの時期の特徴がよく表れています。裸婦の健康的な肉体からはルノワールの影響も感じられます。 満谷 国四郎 1874‐1936 岡山県吉備郡総社町(現・総社市)生まれ。1891年に上京し初代五姓田芳柳に入門、ついで小山正太郎の不同舎で学んだ。1900年のパリ万国博覧会で銅牌受賞。同年に渡米しヨーロッパを歴訪し、帰国後に太平洋画会の結成に参加、第1回文展では審査員を務めた。大原孫三郎の支援で再び渡欧し、帰国後はポスト印象派の影響を受けつつ、東洋的な要素を取り入れた独自の作風を展開した。 |
| Description | Mitsutani is known to be a painter who changed his style significantly between the first and second halves of his artistic career. The catalyst for this change was his second trip to Europe, which began in 1911. At that time, he was heavily influenced by the artists he studied there, such as Cézanne and Renoir, and he shifted from his previous style, one of thorough realism, to one more decorative and poetic. Mitsutani had already gained acclaim as a painter and even served as a judge for the government-sponsored contemporary Japanese art exhibition (Bunten), but this change in style came as a surprise to the art world at the time. This piece, depicting a nude woman from behind standing on a rock near a mountain stream, was created after the artist had changed his style, and the characteristics from this period are quite evident in the way he expressed volume by blurring one side of the contours. The influence of Renoir can also be seen in the nude woman’s healthy physique. |
