| 作品解説 | 18歳で米沢から上京した椿貞雄は、岸田劉生の個展を見て感銘を受け入門を決意、彼のもとで熱心に絵を学び、切磋琢磨する同士となりました。本作品は、神奈川県鵠沼（現・藤沢市）の劉生の自宅前の道を描いたものとされます。劉生が療養のため鵠沼に引っ越すと、椿も近所に転居して、二人は頻繁に往来しながら創作に励みました。 椿は劉生の影響を強く受けましたが、その個性の違いは明らかでした。麦わら帽の子どもや犬のいる素朴な場面を選びとる視線は椿らしく、強い日差しに揺らぐ空気を感じさせる重い色彩も雪国で育まれた椿の感覚と言えるでしょう。 椿 貞雄 1896‐1957 山形県米沢市生まれ。1914年に上京し、作品に感銘を受けた岸田劉生に師事する。1915年に第15回巽画会展で二等賞受賞、草土社結成に参加。1920年に京都で初個展。1922年に春陽会に客員入会した。1927年に同会を辞し、武者小路実篤らが提唱する大調和展に参加。1928年には国画会結成に参加した。翌年の岸田の死に落胆するも、1932年に渡欧。パリを中心にオランダやスペインなどを訪れ、パリでは個展も開催した。帰国後は、個展や国画会展などで発表を続け、静物や風景のほか、家族の像を愛情深く描いた。 |
| Description | Tsubaki Sadao, who had moved to Tokyo from Yonezawa at the age of 18, was so impressed by a solo exhibition by Kishida Ryusei that he decided to become his apprentice. He studied painting under Ryusei with enthusiasm, and the two became close friends, mutually encouraging one another to improve. This piece is believed to depict the road in front of Ryusei’s home in Kugenuma, Kanagawa Prefecture (now Fujisawa City). When Ryusei moved to Kugenuma for medical treatment, Tsubaki also moved nearby, and the two visited each other frequently as they worked on their art. While Tsubaki was strongly influenced by Ryusei, the differences in their individual characteristics were clear. The gaze selecting a simple scene featuring a child in a straw hat and a dog is distinctive of Tsubaki, and the heavy colors evoking air wavering in strong sunlight are also characteristic of his sensibility, which was cultivated in a snowy region. |
