CommentaryAfter graduating from the design department of Kyoto City Technical School of Art, Hada Teruo worked as a designer for textile companies in Kyoto and Osaka run by Nishimura Sozaemon and Tatsumura Heizo, while also actively exhibiting his own art.

The subject of this work is the well-known Japanese folktale Momotaro. Momotaro and his companions, a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant, are each dressed in armor like warriors and charmingly portrayed as they set out to vanquish demons. The figures are drawn with fine lines that have a sense of tension and convey Hada’s distinctive air of languid elegance. In 1932, he held the Hada Teruo Art Works Exhibition at the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and this is thought to have been among the works shown there.
