Biography
Copperplate print artist. Born in Kumamoto Prefecture. Studied painting under Shisei Tomita at Mifune Junior High School, Kumamoto. In 1934, entered Tokyo University of the Arts, during which time he acquired copperplate printing techniques. In 1939, upon graduation, he joined the military, and a year later, was sent to mainland China. From 1951, began to exhibit the “Elegy for a New Conscript” series, which was based on his military experience. After he ceased to produce works on the theme of war, he began to exhibit printworks sprinkled with irony and humor, derived from his deep insight into society and humanity. From 1983, he also began to create sculptures. He gained international recognition through holding solo exhibitions such as in the Albertina Museum, Vienna (1979) and the British Museum (1993).
