Biography

Contemporary artist. Born in Tokyo. In 1958, graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts. The following year, exhibited the painting series “Rhyme,” which used paint mixed with sand. From around 1962, produced the 3D series “Compact Object,” which encased daily objects in polyester resin. In 1963, via connecting with many artists through his avant-garde activities (referred to as “Anti-Art”), he founded the art collective “Hi-Red Center,” along with Jiro Takamatsu and Genpei Akasegawa. He gained attention and became the flag-bearer of 1960s art for staging street happenings and performances, which were held in collaboration with a Butoh group. In 1985, his painting exhibition was held at our museum.
